canzone di ieri, oggi affrontiamo i 15 minuti di rock'n'roll sparato
e rumoroso di "Babe i'm on fire" di Nick Cave & Bad
Seeds.
"Babe i'm on fire"
è contenuta nell'album Nocturama del 2003, per alcuni è in assoluto
la peggior canzone mai fatta dal vecchio Nick ma io non la penso
così. La canzone è ironica e orecchiabile, il fatto che duri ben 15
minuti la rende una sorta di lavaggio del cervello.

"Babe i'm on fire"
può essere considerata una cura omeopatica per il cattivo umore, se
siete giù di morale o tristi per qualche motivo, mettetevi a
guardare il videoclip della canzone a massimo volume. E' impossibile
non rimanere conquistati dal ritmo e dalla vista di Nick Cave ed i
componenti dei Bad Seeds, che per 15 minuti giocano a prendere in
giro tutto e tutti, compresi loro stessi. L'uso della ripetizione di
musica e testo la rende un mantra, un mantra ballabile. Questo la
rende oltre che funzionale come cura per la depressione, anche una
perfetta canzone da festa.

Il significato del testo è comprensibile dalla prima delle oltre quaranta strofe: Tutti dicono "Baby, hey sono eccitato!". "I'm on fire" significa anche essere "sulla cresta dell'onda" e "inarrestabili". Quello cha vuol far passare questa canzone è che anche chi ascolta è "On fire" e se non bastano 15 minuti di rock per incendiarvi (in senso metaforico) non so cos'altro potrebbe farlo.

Il significato del testo è comprensibile dalla prima delle oltre quaranta strofe: Tutti dicono "Baby, hey sono eccitato!". "I'm on fire" significa anche essere "sulla cresta dell'onda" e "inarrestabili". Quello cha vuol far passare questa canzone è che anche chi ascolta è "On fire" e se non bastano 15 minuti di rock per incendiarvi (in senso metaforico) non so cos'altro potrebbe farlo.
Tradurre questa lunghissima canzone ha richiesto molto
più tempo del previsto, il testo contiene molti termini in slang
alcuni dei quali piuttosto oscuri. Grazie all' Urban Dictionary ed al
fatto che nel videoclip Nick e compagni mimano quasi tutto quello che
cantano, sono riuscito a terminare l'opera. Per curiosità, vi
riporto i più importanti:
"paddy with his fertiliser", "Paddy"
è il termine con cui si identifica un irlandese, il fertilizzante è
un richiamo alle bombe artigianali dell'IRA.
"With the ears of cloth", si potrebbe
tradurre con "orecchie da mercante", indica
semplicemente chi non ti ascolta.
"Sonny Liston" è stato un pugile
dell'età dell'oro della boxe, campione mondiale dei pesi massimi dal
1962 al 1964.
"Las Vegas crooner" è il cantante di
Las Vegas, ma inteso in senso lievemente dispregiativo. Un cantautore
melodico piuttosto privo di talento.
"The hooligan mooner"... ogni città
ha il suo modo particolare di chiamare l'abitudine di mostrare il
sedere in pubblico, in questo caso è mooner (da "mezzaluna",
ogni altra spiegazione è superflua).
"Holding a schooner", ovvero tiene in
mano una pinta, è un termine prettamente australiano. Lo "Shooner"
è anche un tipo di imbarcazione, è come dire "una barca di
birra".
"hack at the doorstep" è stato un
osso duro da tradurre. "Hack" ha mille significati,
ma in questo caso è un giornalista particolarmente incompetente,
quasi amatoriale, comunque pagato per la robaccia che scrive.
"The man from the Daily Mail", si
riferisce al sito www.dailymail.co.uk
che propone una specie di notiziario di infima categoria, con storie
degne del Weekly World News per capirci (ma non così divertenti).
"The beatnik, the peacenik, the apparachick
say", "Beatnik" è un termine abbastanza
dispregiativo usato per identificare i simpatizzanti del pensiero
beat. "Peacenik" significa pacifista. "apparachick"
è uno dei termini più oscuri nei quali mi sia capitato di
imbattermi. Cercando in rete e sui forum non si trova praticamente
niente a riguardo, ho trovato solo qualcuno che ipotizzava
significasse "donna che non sembra una donna". Per
fortuna il videoclip ci mostra un rivoluzionario, quindi l'ho
tradotto in tal senso.
"The beach-comber" è colui che cerca
a bordo spiaggia, può essere sia chi cerca conchiglie che chi cerca
oggetti preziosi persi dai bagnanti.
"The cattleman from Down Under", "Down
Under" è un termine slang per dire "Australia"
e quindi è un "allevatore australiano". Tutta la
strofa è incentrata sull'Australia e i suoi problemi di immigrazione
dal sud-est asiatico.
"...the bent copper", "Copper"
significa "rame" ma è anche un termine
dispregiativo slang per "Cop" ovvero
"poliziotto", un po' come dire "piedipiatti".
Questa canzone dà il meglio
se accompagnata dal videoclip, imperdibile la parte finale:
